Named after a French subculture from the World War II era which followed similar trends to the Zoot Suit era in the U.S., Zazou City is a jazz band with of style that exhibits strong European influences.
Led by Chicago native, Bart Ramsey, the band is now based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They categorize themselves as “ gypsy jazz,” and their sound certainly displays a mystical characteristic. Zazou City combines the European jazz influences of Django Reinhardt with those of American giants ranging from Louis Armstrong to the beboppers. Theband also practices what Jelly Roll Morton called “ the Spanish tinge.” Using everything from choro to tango, Zazou City combines Spanish flair with a number of original compositions.
