The John Mahoney Big Band

The John Mahoney Big Band specializes in original compositions and arrangements by John Mahoney demonstrating the highest levels of performance and improvisational skill.

The John Mahoney Big Band has performed widely in New Orleans, including appearances at the Contemporary Arts Center’s “At the Solarium Series,” the 2000 IAJE Conference, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as well its primary performance venue-Snug Harbor, which is New Orleans’ premiere jazz club.

John Mahoney is a Professor and Coordinator of Jazz Studies in the College of Music of Loyola University in New Orleans.

He directs the Loyola University Jazz Band, which won the Dr. M.E. “Gene” Hall Award for the most outstanding collegiate big band at the 2007 North Texas Jazz Festival at Addison.

A native of northern New York, he received his B.S. in Music Education from the State University of New York at Potsdam. In 1978, after playing professionally for six years, John earned his M.M. degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music, and began teaching at Loyola.
